Europe’s largest tech conference – we were there!

Digital Planet is exhausted and emotional after the roller-coaster event that was the Dublin Web Summit.  Last year was impressive but this year’s event was just excellent.  We met great people and there was some amazing speakers with ground breaking ideas and insights into the connected world we live in today and a glance at around the corner. We will definitely be back next year.

A break from the norm

We decided to support the great efforts of the summit team and sponsor a stand this year. At some events you find that that you have to fish for people to hook and speak to but we were surprised and delighted with the eagerness that people had to come and learn about what we had to offer. The environment fostered a great sense of technical camaraderie with minimal need for ‘hard pitching’ or selling. Delegates had serious intent weather that intend was educational, exploratory, or more advanced and everyone enjoyed the experience and came away better off.

What is BYOD

For some years now, organisations have been looking at ways to reduce the overall IT budget and spend.  Sometimes, such initiatives are pushed from the employees, onto the organisations, as new technologies are released to the markets.

Given the large amount of smartphone offerings in the market, and people’s desire to own these devices, smartphones started to become a gadget that everybody could own.  As a result of employees started bringing in their own devices, they placed requests with the local IT teams to provide access to corporate emails and other data on these smartphones.  This poses a challenge for the IT departments as they now have to develop systems and process for securing these unsupported devices.  Organisations quickly realised that this could be done by enabling certain solutions within the infrastructure.  However, the challenge of managing these devices was still a challenge.

Bring Your Own Device or ‘BYOD’, and was “born” as a direct outcome of staff bringing in their own devices.  Organisations have to embrace this new movement and work on catching up with their systems and processes.

One of the benefits of allowing the BYOD initiative was that staff would be more productive, also when away from the office, as they have access to e.g. email all the time.  However, there are obviously certain risks associated with this and not all staff could get access to their email for a number of reasons – I’m not going into too much detail on these reasons in this post.

What is BYOD?

The best way of describing BYOD is that employees are allowed to bring in their personal smartphones, and connect these with corporate services – currently primarily email.  Some organisations will allow more access and others will restrict access, but both models will allow these devices to access corporate data.

Another term that some users might be familiar with is BYOT, which broadens the scope slightly, and allows employees to Bring Your Own Technology.   This would cover the likes of computers, iPads and other systems.

One of the appealing factors for implementing either BYOD or BYOT is that the responsibility and maintenance of the device falls with the employee, and no longer becomes a device that the local IT team has to support.  Maintenance, support and warranty is managed by the person, and their relationship with the e.g. smartphone provider.

What organisations need to manage and support is the integration points with email.  Some stats suggests that 90% of employees are already using their own technology at work, for e.g. LinkedIn activities, Twitter, internet browsing, etc.  These services are using 3rd party networks, such as Vodafone, BT or O2 data networks.  Again, these are links that the organisation doesn’t (need to) support.

However, to safeguard corporate and client data, organisations can’t just allow devices access their data without some level of security.  Data could potentially be stored on these devices and if stolen or lost, confidential data could be accessed and used by external parties – parties that should not have access to this data and that might use it for malicious. purposes.

Because of the importance of these issues, HiberniaEvros has decided to enter this market, not with our own device, but with a MDM (mobile device management) solution from Zenprise – a world leader in addressing the challenges brought about by the BYOD / BYOT concept.

The above just scratches the surface and complexity of BYOD, we’re happy to discuss this technology in more detail and work on a solution that meets your requirements and supports your business strategy.

Bulgari – Consolidating services

– featured in THE SUNDAY BUSINESS POST, May 2012, by Leslie Faughnan

Bulgari, originally a jeweller founded in Rome in 1884, is today a 3,800 employee multinational with 195 shops in 24 countries. Regarded as one of the most up- market luxury brands in jewellery, it has extended into watches, leather goods, per- fume and hotels. In 2011 a controlling interest was acquired from the Bulgari family for €3.7 billion by LMVH, (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) a global leader in luxury goods.

Dublin’s Upper Mayor Street beside the IFSC has been home for over four years to Bulgari’s supply chain and logistics office, with more than 60 staff for its global operations. HiberniaEvros has been its local IT partner since the beginning and just over two years ago began a parallel relationship by taking over all of its print requirements in a managed print contract.

“A company-wide reorganisation saw responsibility for all kinds of printing move from our general services to the IT department,” said Edo Tami, the Dublin-based associate IT director of the group.  “We are quite heavy print users here, with all staff requiring smart print facilities. I was essentially the only IT professional based here and I was already stretched, as well as being out of the country frequently, so I looked immediately for a locally-managed solution.

HiberniaEvros and the Definition of Managed Print Services 2012

How to reduce print costs

2011 was an exciting year for all of us here in The Managed Print Services Team, we increased our staff by 25% and we grew our business by 37%. We took on new clients who embraced the idea of moving from a traditional break fix agreement on their print fleet to a proactive level of service. Our growth rates in 2011 are in keeping with the levels of growth that our primary partners Xerox are also experiencing across the UK and Ireland.

At the beginning of 2012 we asked our customers to describe what a “Managed Print Service” meant to them. It was no surprise that they came back with variations in their answers; companies continue to use the term loosely, this is result of what has been available in the market place. To best describe what a Managed Print Service is, let’s take for a moment the word print out of the equation.

The definition of a “Managed Service” is the practice of proactively monitoring, supporting and maintaining responsibility for your hardware as a strategic method for improved effective and efficient operations.

Typically in today’s environments hardware is managed remotely, so an obvious extension with over 20 years’ experience in providing a “Managed Service” was to provide the same service for your Print Environment. HiberniaEvros Managed Print Services can proactively monitor your fleet of print assets like it would your IT hardware.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to 2012. In January 4 new customer totalling over 200 print devices have moved their service delivery model to a Managed Print Service.  At this rate and pace of deployment we will see continued growth throughout the year as our customers look at ways to reduce their operational spend on a day to day basis.

I would like to thank all our customers for their business in 2011 and I look forward to meeting you all in 2012.

Welcome and Thanks

For launch of the HiberniaEvros’ Newsletter Initiative, Bob Murray (Managing Director of HiberniaEvros Technology Group) was asked to write a few words, outlining the views and opportunities that arises in the near future.  This initiative shows that the organisation is keen on keeping clients, new and old, included in what’s happening and how we can assist you in your upcoming challenges.  Bob explains this better, so go ahead, read the below letter from Bob.

The pleasure has fallen on me to pen a few words of welcome to the inaugural HiberniaEvros Technology Group newsletter. Although they may venture, I don’t believe the best sales person in the world could tell you about everything that’s happening in HiberniaEvros, least of all what the latest industry trends are from some of our partners such as HP, Microsoft, and VMware. So, we’ve hit on this newsletter idea to do just that.

I’d like to say that we’ve decided to do this newsletter due to requests from our clients, and that this is therefore your newsletter. But, I can’t, it’s our newsletter which has been brought about by a need; the need to provide you with another arm of service and support. We’ve put in considerable time and effort developing it in the hope that it will be a source of real value to everyone.

It will not be a sales pitch or just another social tool. In it you will see information that we hope will add benefit and real value to your business be it from within these walls or across the vast array of websites, lists, blogs and tweets across the world. From the outset it will continue to be a newsletter by us, for you.

Twenty years in this business has taught me that the most successful client relationships are the ones where clients regard us as a partner rather than a mere supplier. By partnering through this medium you will get a better understanding of what we and our partners are up to and we’ll get a better understanding of your requirements and steer our business in a direction that suits your needs.

We’re hoping that you will engage with us and communicate to us any areas or topics you would like to see and if all goes according to plan over time it will become your newsletter; detailing topics that are important to you in your everyday tasks.

For those of you who have worked with us in the past, thank you. For those of you that are new to HiberniaEvros, welcome. We look forward to partnering with you through 2012 and beyond.

Bob Murray

Our Maiden Voyage

HiberniaEvros recently, more accurately on 7 February, released their first edition of a Newsletter.  The basic need for releasing a newsletter is fairly simple – keeping our clients (you) informed of activities within our organisation and also what’s happening on a larger scale in regards to what’s being discussed on the web, social networks, blogs and outside Ireland.

The first newsletter gives a quick introduction to the views of Bob Murray, and how he sees how this newsletter will benefit both us and you.

Furthermore, the newsletter introduces two areas of HiberniaEvros that are seeing an increased level of activity in recent months – both can assist adding value to your organization, in form of finding the right resources and how to reduce costs spent on printing.

  • Managed Print Services; helps companies gain control of their print environments, by designing and introducing new process for working with your printers.  The main objective is helping you to reduce costs, enhance employee productivity, secure your information and documents and achieve environmental sustainability.
  • Technology Staffing Services; using our core IT expertise, we work closely with you to find the staff you need to support your organisation, whether that is consultants, contractors, permanent or outsourced resources.  Working with this team will allow you to focus on your critical business activities, while we find the resources you need.

In addition to introducing some of our services, we are also sharing what’s close to our corporate strategy, which is working with our community.  As part of this, we are inviting our readers to participate in a short survey about outsourcing and cloud initiatives.  For every completed survey, we will make a donation to Crumlin Children’s Hospital.  The kids are our future, so we need to make sure that they have the support they need.

As part of the newsletter, we have also launched a Facebook profile, Twitter and of course LinkedIn.  Many of you might already follow/like us on these social networks, if not, then visit those sites and take part in the streams over there.  I will be honest, they are just starting up, so content is still being shared.

The blog site you are visiting now, will continue to grow content and will share our views on various streams.  Again, if you want to share or suggest articles, please use the comment sections below.

We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter.  If you have any feedback, leave it on this site or contact us directly.

Again, to our new and existing customers “Welcome & Thanks”!
