Cloud Capital Forum

This year’s Cloud Capital Forum kicked off last Friday 23 November and took place at the Convention Centre, Dublin.  It was three hours spent with some of Ireland’s digital leaders on cloud computing, cover many aspects of cloud as well as big data and green IT.

Both business and political decision makers attended the event and a common view was that the cloud presents great opportunities for turning the Irish economy around.  In fact, many believe that Ireland has the opportunity to position itself as a cloud centre of excellence; a shining light for Europe and key link to the US and China.

The keynote speakers covered many views and possibilities of the Cloud evolution.  Although the cloud has been around for a number of years, in different shapes and with various names, this is still a new era and it’s not the usual companies that are leading the race.  The competition is fierce and one could compare this with war; new companies coming online, increased rates of efficiency and ability to service a global audience à improved growth circle.

Welcome and Thanks

For launch of the HiberniaEvros’ Newsletter Initiative, Bob Murray (Managing Director of HiberniaEvros Technology Group) was asked to write a few words, outlining the views and opportunities that arises in the near future.  This initiative shows that the organisation is keen on keeping clients, new and old, included in what’s happening and how we can assist you in your upcoming challenges.  Bob explains this better, so go ahead, read the below letter from Bob.

The pleasure has fallen on me to pen a few words of welcome to the inaugural HiberniaEvros Technology Group newsletter. Although they may venture, I don’t believe the best sales person in the world could tell you about everything that’s happening in HiberniaEvros, least of all what the latest industry trends are from some of our partners such as HP, Microsoft, and VMware. So, we’ve hit on this newsletter idea to do just that.

I’d like to say that we’ve decided to do this newsletter due to requests from our clients, and that this is therefore your newsletter. But, I can’t, it’s our newsletter which has been brought about by a need; the need to provide you with another arm of service and support. We’ve put in considerable time and effort developing it in the hope that it will be a source of real value to everyone.

It will not be a sales pitch or just another social tool. In it you will see information that we hope will add benefit and real value to your business be it from within these walls or across the vast array of websites, lists, blogs and tweets across the world. From the outset it will continue to be a newsletter by us, for you.

Twenty years in this business has taught me that the most successful client relationships are the ones where clients regard us as a partner rather than a mere supplier. By partnering through this medium you will get a better understanding of what we and our partners are up to and we’ll get a better understanding of your requirements and steer our business in a direction that suits your needs.

We’re hoping that you will engage with us and communicate to us any areas or topics you would like to see and if all goes according to plan over time it will become your newsletter; detailing topics that are important to you in your everyday tasks.

For those of you who have worked with us in the past, thank you. For those of you that are new to HiberniaEvros, welcome. We look forward to partnering with you through 2012 and beyond.

Who’s at the helm now?

To be honest, I rarely get emotionally involved when celebrities pass away.  It’s sad to hear the news and I feel sorry for their families, but I do not get emotional.

Why would I?  I don’t know these individuals personally and I have only seen their performance on a stage or silver screen – which is probably not even their real personality.

But for some reason, when this message appeared on my iPhone, and shortly after on my iPad, it was like being told someone close to you had passed away.  I know it sounds very strange, given that Steve Jobs has never heard of me and I have never met him.

However, I admired Steve Jobs for what he accomplished within Apple and outside Apple.  You could probably say that he is my John Lennon.

When you then see the outpour of support and grief throughout the World, as the news circled the Globe, one can only begin to understand how many people he touched.  Wonderful pictures of people showing their sadness, almost brought tears to my eyes, all very personal and filled with sorrow.

Here’s a man who through his company developed so many amazing and utterly wonderful creations.  He changed the way we use music, the way we use phones, the way we can access information anywhere.  He introduced simple and yet powerful software and not to forget truly beautiful designs.

He did not only raise the bar for the technology – he was raising the game beyond the grasp of the competition.  The competitors could only copy what he created and rarely come close to what his products delivered.

He inspired young and old people around the World, by showing them that anything is possible if you dare to chase your dream.

Just imagine, a world without Toy Story?  Yes, Pixar was one of his ventures and NeXT paved the way for Mac OS as we know it today.  Even the first Mac introduced had the first pointing device, making sure users no longer had to rely on command line control.

The big question still lingering in my head is, how will Apple Corp progress without their talisman?

I’m certain Mr. Cook will be a great CEO, but does he have the same tenacious and involved approach as Steve Jobs.  I know Mr. Cook’s presentation of the iPhone 4s was a bit subdued, but now we know why.  As a close friend of Mr Jobs, he was probably aware of the state of his health, and it must have been difficult to launch something new, knowing that your friend was fighting a tough battle.

That said, will Apple continue to develop and release groundbreaking products / technologies, or will they just release updated versions of current products.  Only time will tell.

It is with sadness in my heart that I bid you farewell Steve.  I hope your family stays strong and understands that they have the support of millions around the Globe.

€1.6 million injected into the cloud

There has been a lot of hype around the cloud in the last 12 months, and the cloud is gaining increased momentum every day.

Ireland is looking to establish itself as the cloud hub of Europe and has in recent weeks announced that cloud technology will become part of the curriculum in various degrees.  This shows the commitment by Ireland to making Ireland a cloud technology centre.

HiberniaEvros has long talked about the cloud and to underpin this, HiberniaEvros has in recent months invested €1.6 million in a new cloud computing division.  Digital Planet, the new venture, will create 50 jobs over the next three years, supporting clients across the Island.  This is a brave new service and one that will increase HiberniaEvros’ presence in the Irish market.

Digital Planet will provide a so-called “computing on demand” to companies that want to outsource their IT infrastructure, and its day-to-day management, to an external provider.”

Describing the new offering as “Infrastructure-as-a-Service”, Brian Larkin, Operations Director at HiberniaEvros said: “There is no reason why IT infrastructure should not be as easy and cost-effective to use as electricity or water with the flick of a switch or tap.  The technologies and environment are now available to make this happen.

HiberniaEvros is very excited about this new service and invites clients to contact us to learn more about this.

HiberniaEvros receives ICT award

The HiberniaEvros Technology Group is very proud to announce that we won an award at this year’s ICT Excellence Awards 2011.  The ICT Excellence Awards, which took take place on the 19th May, showcase the very best from the ICT Industry in Ireland, highlighting how innovative, creative and robust the industry is.

For the past 10 years, ICT has been awarding the ICT Excellence Awards to companies from the ICT Industry in Ireland.  In order to participate in the annual nomination, companies have to submit an application form, outlining why they should be considered for an award.

The ICT Excellence Awards have for some time now demonstrated just how many innovative and creative companies exist in the Irish market.  They have set the benchmark for people to demonstrate skill and diversity“, Eoin O’Driscoll, Managing Director, Aderra

The ICT Excellence Awards are divided into two main category groups; Projects and Business Awards, with the Business Awards divided into a further 12 categories, each focusing on the strong attributes and skills required to be considered for the award.

HiberniaEvros was shortlisted for the Corporate, Social and Environmental Initiative of the Year.  This award is presented to a company who demonstrated an outstanding recognition of the technology industry’s responsibility to environmental best practice.

The list of shortlisted candidates was amazing, and consisted of EMC, Intel and Microsoft – very strong competition indeed for this prestigious award.  Each of these organisations are known for having excellent CSR initiatives and have shown year-on-year that they are committed to supporting their local communities.

So, it was a very proud moment when the name of HiberniaEvros was announced at the ceremony, and this recognises HiberniaEvros’ positive contribution to our local environment.

The initiative that secured us the victory was our “Leaders on our Level” conference, which took place in Croke park earlier this year.  The aim of the conference was to teach Transition Year students about leadership, help them understand their choices and provide a framework to understand long-term consequences to the actions and choices they take.

HiberniaEvros will continue to work on such initiatives as it both inspires and encourages our young people.  The future can be bright, if you build a proper framework for the future.
