Europe’s largest tech conference – we were there!

Digital Planet is exhausted and emotional after the roller-coaster event that was the Dublin Web Summit.  Last year was impressive but this year’s event was just excellent.  We met great people and there was some amazing speakers with ground breaking ideas and insights into the connected world we live in today and a glance at around the corner. We will definitely be back next year.

A break from the norm

We decided to support the great efforts of the summit team and sponsor a stand this year. At some events you find that that you have to fish for people to hook and speak to but we were surprised and delighted with the eagerness that people had to come and learn about what we had to offer. The environment fostered a great sense of technical camaraderie with minimal need for ‘hard pitching’ or selling. Delegates had serious intent weather that intend was educational, exploratory, or more advanced and everyone enjoyed the experience and came away better off.

Microsoft RTM Release

On Thursday 11 October, Microsoft announced the RTM of Office 2013, SharePoint 2013, Exchange 2013, Lync 2013, and Project + Visio 2013.  But, what does that mean for customers and what other dates are important?

If you are lucky enough to attend the Microsoft SharePoint in Las Vegas, 12-15 November 2012, then you’ll get all the details.  In the meantime, here are a few key items to put into your calendar:

  • Mid-November – Volume licensing customers with Software Assurance will be able to download the Office 2013 applications as well as other Office products including SharePoint 2013, Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 through the Volume Licensing Service Center.
  • Mid-November – IT professionals and developers will be able to download the final version via their TechNet or MSDN subscriptions.
  • December – Office 2013 applications as well as other Office products including SharePoint 2013, Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 will be available on the Volume Licensing price list on 1 December
  • First quarter 2013. General availability of Office 2013 applications as well as other Office products including SharePoint 2013, Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 is planned for the early 2013

Customers who are already using Office 365 should start seeing updates from November onwards, featuring some the newly released capabilities.

By Microsoft previous release standard, this is probably the largest ranging and most ambitious release to date.  The amount of products covered in this release covers most of the Office, server and cloud families.  Every one of these components has received an overhaul and focuses much more on the user experience than ever before.  It also incorporates the touch friendly design that will be available on Windows 8 – and opens new doors for portables for socializing, reading, note-taking, meetings, etc.

Are you planning on upgrading to these new families?

Are you looking at deploying Windows 8 within your organization?

HiberniaEvros will be able to discuss all these technologies in much more detail with you, and perhaps assist you planning your technology roadmap and activities.

Safe browsing

Children are, because of easy access to the internet through home computers and smart phones, migrating to the internet much earlier.  It normally starts with innocent free online games, then they join some social networks, get their first internet iPod Touch with internet access and then they take possession of the family computer for homework and projects.  Before you know it, your kids have more social networks than us parents.  What’s even scarier is the fact that they probably know more about these social networks than us, but with less interest in preserving their privacy, which then opens serious security concerns for your kids and for the family.

It’s becoming more and more important that parents have the serious conversation with our kids about online security and best practices.  How many parents have even had this conversation with their kids and how many have helped their kids implementing safer policies on their Facebook account?

For some kids, taking a photo with their smart phone and posting on their Facebook page is fairly innocent.  But some of these photos should not be shared with the World and may actually cause harm to some individuals, especially if these images are circulated among groups making fun of people – hence the term cyber bullying.

Mobile Device Management

In short, Mobile Device Management (MDM) is a software solutions that allows for the management of mobile devices, primarily aimed at mobile phones and iPad/tablets – irrespectively of mobile operator/carrier.  It’s an ideal tool to be deployed within organisations that supports either BYOD or company owned device management.

MDM solutions attempts to secure, monitor, manage and support mobile devices deployed, and that have been granted access to the corporate infrastructure such as mail.  Devices can be added manually, user initiated requests and/or using over the air technology – where the MDM solution sends an invitation to a known device to join the MDM infrastructure.

Once an MDM solution is deployed within an organisation, it can assist reduce support costs and also manage business risks by enabling security features, and enables corporate IT departments to manage the many mobile devices used across the enterprise.  The core objective of any MDM solution is the central remote management, where devices can be secured over the air and wiped if lost/stolen.

With the increase of BYOD and company owned initiatives. it’s important that our clients have access to the best products and solutions to assist with.  As a result, HiberniaEvros has decided to enter this market, not with our own device, but with a MDM (mobile device management) solution from Zenprise – a world leader in addressing the challenges brought about by the BYOD and company owned concepts.

The above just scratches the surface and complexity of MDM, we’re happy to discuss this technology in more detail and work on a solution that meets your requirements and supports your business strategy.

it@cork 2012 – review

How IT can help bridge financial deficit

HiberniaEvros were proud to sponsor the recent European Tech Cluster annual conference on 29th May in the Maryborough Hotel in Cork. It was a fantastic event and really showcased the strength of the IT industry in the rebel county. We sponsored the twitter feed on the day with the hashtag #itcork trending throughout Ireland.

Our Sales and Marketing Director John Kennedy remarked, “I was really impressed by the enthusiasm and passion of both the speakers and the audience on the future of the economy. It’s something I haven’t witnessed in a while and I think that it’s appropriate right now.”

There was a wide variety of attendees across sections of the business and academic communities among the 230 attendees. They witnessed passionate and stirring presentations from speakers such as Ben Hammersley, editor-at-large of Wired magazine and advisor to UK prime minister David Cameron; Sean O’Sullivan, Dragons Den; Bill Lioa Coder Dojo founder; and Kevin O’Leary, CEO of Qumas.

The event was opened by Minister Sean Sherlock followed by Denis Collins, chairman of the European Tech Cluster, who called on Government to engage with Industry leaders to address the skills shortage in the Irish tech sector and elaborated on the incremental growth creation for Ireland by embracing the growth in IT industry. Guests spoke on how growth in the IT sector could lead to more positive effects on the wider economy in general, with a potential for six jobs created for every one in technology.

The highlight for us though had to be the CoderDojo kids such as Harry Moran (officially the world’s youngest Mac app developer  who’s game Pizzabot surpassed Angry Birds and Call of Duty to make it to the top of the Mac App charts) demonstrating their extraordinary talents. What is CoderDojo? Follow the links below to explore the remarkable new movement that could be key to Ireland’s competitive advantage:

Digital Planet ROI on HP Cloud Platform

Digital Planet has worked with many clients throughout the 12 months, to move to a cloud environment.  Through great work, it is clear that the we have a winning strategy for offering cloud services to our clients.  The below is an extract from a recent released IDC report, which shows how we have been doing.

– For more information on Digital Planet or cloud computing visit www.digitalplanet.ie or email info@digitalplanet.ie.

Digital Planet, a leading Irish managed services provider, is addressing the emerging cloud market opportunity, bringing enhanced reliability, new service offerings, and greater agility. Leveraging HP’s CloudSystem, it has been able to optimize its business offering; increasing revenue while reducing costs and achieving a 96% ROI over the ten months of operation.

In the report also highlighted misconceptions around marketing of the cloud; “For some, the term “cloud computing” was becoming a little tainted by the years of marketing rhetoric and conjecture, which was long on concept but short on hard financial rigor. We hope therefore that it is refreshing for readers to encounter a company that has trusted in the new IT model and has in turn been able to win the trust of its demanding enterprise customers. We have been able to show a clear and impressive return on investment for the 10 months that the solution has been in place.”

Background

In less than a year, HP CloudSystem has helped Digital Planet generate €1 million in new business and reduce the cost of operations by 46%. Public and private HP cloud platforms augment the company’s in-house IT infrastructure, enabling Digital Planet to offer flexible, cost-effective infrastructure as a service (IaaS) to its customers.

Digital Planet’s clients use a service management portal to monitor and configure their environment day-to-day or choose new infrastructure solutions from a service catalogue. This enables them to make changes such as deploying an additional virtual server in just a few minutes without manual intervention.

“More companies in Ireland are looking to transform the way that IT serves their business,” says Brian Larkin, Digital Planet’s co-founder and operations director. “They want their infrastructure delivered as a service that can speed deployment and minimise the need for capital investments. Digital Planet is all about leveraging a cloud-based delivery model to meet that need.”

“HP cloud solutions deliver business transformation and innovation,” says Martin Murphy, Managing Director, HP Ireland. “They help drive growth and profitability through improvements to the business model, enabling Digital Planet to act as a virtual IT team for its customers. The result is that the people who are currently employed by those companies can spend more time delivering value-added services that drive their company forward.”
